Beyond the Bench: The Anatomy of a Custom 6.5-284 Norma Precision Build
In the world of firearms, there’s a distinct line between a rifle that is “assembled” and one that is bespoke. At Custom Shooting Solutions, we don’t just put parts together; we curate an experience. We look for a specific synergy between the action, the glass, and the caliber to create a tool that feels like a natural extension of the shooter.
This project is a testament to that philosophy—a purpose-built powerhouse designed to bridge the gap between a high-alpine hunt and a precision long-range match. Here’s the “why” and “how” behind every component.

The Heart of the Build: Why 6.5-284 Norma?
When selecting a caliber for a custom build, it’s easy to jump on the latest “short-action-sauce” trend. But for this rifle, I went back to a legendary performer: the 6.5-284 Norma.
Originally a wildcat benchrest cartridge, the 6.5-284 has a reputation for being exceptionally “flat-shooting” with high ballistic coefficients. It offers a significant velocity boost over the 6.5 Creedmoor without the punishing recoil of the larger magnums. It’s a sophisticated round—an “insider’s choice” that provides the reach needed for cross-canyon shots on a trophy elk while maintaining the surgical precision required for steel at 1,000 yards.
The Foundation: Defiance Meets Christensen Arms
If the caliber is the heart, the action is the soul. We started with a Defiance Deviant action. In the world of custom builds, Defiance is the gold standard for smoothness and tight tolerances. It’s built like a tank but cycles like silk.
To keep the rifle nimble for field carry without sacrificing accuracy, we paired it with a Christensen Arms carbon fiber wrapped barrel. You get the stiffness and cooling properties of a heavy target profile at a fraction of the weight. It’s topped with a clean stainless finish that sets off the carbon weave perfectly.

The Chassis: McMillan Carbon Fiber & Ergonomics
A precision rifle is only as good as the interface between the shooter and the machine. We chose a McMillan Carbon Fiber stock for its legendary durability and weight savings.
- Adjustability: We’ve integrated an adjustable cheek riser and included Length of Pull (LOP) adjustment pieces. Whether you’re wearing a heavy winter parka or a light range shirt, the rifle fits you—not the other way around.
- Mounting Versatility: We’ve outfitted it with a 4″ picatinny rail up front for traditional bipods and a 2″ ARCA rail on the bottom middle for tripod-based glassing or shooting.
- Field Ready: With QD (Quick Detach) attachment points on both the buttstock and fore-stock, transitioning to a sling in the field is instantaneous.
Precision Control: TriggerTech & Hawkins
Breaking a shot should be a surprise, not a struggle. We installed a TriggerTech Single Stage Diamond Trigger. It features a “zero-creep” break that is arguably the crispest in the industry.
For the bottom metal, versatility was the name of the game. We’ve installed the Hawkins Precision Hunter DBM (Detachable Box Magazine) for a flush, snag-free profile while hunting. However, we know our clients like to do it all, so we include the Hawkins M5 Bottom Metal as well. If you’re heading to a precision match and want to run Magpul AICS magazines for higher capacity, the swap is straightforward and professional.
Optics: The Burris PH 4-20×50 “Hybrid” Experience
Choosing the Burris PH 4-20×50 scope was a deliberate move to create an “old school mixed with new tech” experience. The optic feels traditional—rugged, tactile, and intuitive—but it hides a digital heart. The PEK (Programmable Elevation Knob) system allows you to dial your distance digitally, providing a level of speed and confidence that’s hard to beat in high-pressure field conditions. It’s an optic that stands up to the Missouri brush or a mountain blizzard while giving you a high-tech edge on the dial.
The Finishing Touches
No build is complete without the supporting cast. We’ve paired this rifle with a Warne Skyline Precision bipod. It offers the cant and traverse capabilities needed for uneven terrain, locking in rock-solid when the moment of truth arrives.
The Final Verdict
This build isn’t just about the sum of its parts—it’s about the confidence they instill. From the TriggerTech’s clean break to the McMillan’s ergonomic fit, every component was chosen to ensure that when you’re behind this 6.5-284, the only thing you have to worry about is your breathing.
Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or a long-range enthusiast, this is what a bespoke solution looks like.
